GitHyp, a website which tracks game statistics, compiled a list of the most played games on Steam for 2016. "Dota 2" came out on top as the most played game on Steam last year and was followed on the list by "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive."

According to gaming website VG247, for Steam, last year was the biggest in terms of the number of released games. The year 2016 saw a record number of games released on Steam but the top of the most-played charts did not include any of those games. Games released this year it seems, did not capture the interest of players for longer than the attention they gave to games released in previous years.

A few interesting details about the top games of 2016 on Steam were published by data trackers at GitHyp. Peak player numbers gave notable insights and even more interesting were the number of players per hour for each game.

The top two spots based purely on peak player numbers, were taken by "Dota 2" and "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive." This comes as no surprise since both games also topped the list in 2015. This makes the second consecutive year that both games have taken the top two spots on the chart.

The next three games in the top five in terms of peak player numbers include games released in 2016. "No Man's Sky", "XCOM 2", and "Dark Souls 3" round out the top five.

All these three games released in 2016 had enough people playing simultaneously after their launches to crack the top five. The list of top games looks very different however, when based on number of players per hour rather than peak player numbers.

The three games launched in 2016 were not able to sustain their numbers as players stopped playing the games regularly soon after their release. The top five games with the highest number of players per hour did not include any game released in 2016. All five games in the top five came out in 2015.

"Dota 2" and "CS:GO" were again the top notchers for this list. Both games topped the list for the second straight year as well. "Team Fortress 2" and "Grand Theft Auto 5" were next on the list. This was the second straight year that both had made the top five.

"Sid Meier's Civilization 5" moved up from the 9th spot in 2015 to take the 5th spot in 2016. "Fallout 4" dropped out of the top five in 2015 to land in 12th place on the list. "Dota 2" and "CS:GO" dominated the charts for 2016.
