The criterion of the Seven Wonders of the World selection was truly and greatly met by The Colosseum as it is has a firm human-made structure and was preserved by for a long period of time until the current time. The Colosseum has a great history during the age of the Roman empires.

According to History, the Colosseum was originally known as Flavian Amphitheater and it was started by Roman emperor Nero. Nero had built an enormous golden palace for himself after a huge fire devastated Rome in A.D. 64. Nero's rule had brought chaos and series of war not until he took his own life in A.D.68. Vespasian, a Flavian emperor took over Nero's throne and declared Nero's golden palace to be built as an amphitheater where people could enjoy gladiatorial fights and other forms of entertainment.

The construction of the Colosseum continued in the reign of Titus and was completed during his brother's rule and succession (Domitian). Being a grand amphitheater, The Colosseum measures 620 by 513 feet (190 by 155 meters) and it is the largest amphitheater in the Roman World. The structure is very unique as it reflects different styles and orders such as the Doric and Corinth. Furthermore, it is made up of stone and concrete including the arc of Constantine in the entrance.

The twentieth century marks the changes in the structure of the Colosseum as weather, disasters, and crime vandalism nearly devastated almost two-thirds of the structure. Luckily the restoration took in the year 1990s and has proceeded through the years.

Travel tips from USA Today reported that the architectural structure receives almost close to 5 million visitors every year. The Colosseum is actually open every day except December 25 and January 1 as this mark the yuletide season. The peak season where the slow moving line of visitors is packed up is during June and July as these months are also the best time to visit the place.

During tours and getting tickets, one way to avoid long lines is to get a ticket online or avail a Roma pass or a discount card. The Roma pass is available in tourist offices around the city or maybe taken through online transactions. Furthermore, the Roma pass allows tourist to visit two attractions for free and a discount in case the tourist wish to visit more.

A tourist can, of course, hire a tourist guide that will actually stay for almost 30 minutes to show the features and describe the history of the structure. After 30 minutes the tourist can be alone to explore more of the place. A self-guide audio is also available in different languages for tourist who seeks privacy and who wanted to be alone.
