Koei Tecmo has announced the latest in the long running Dynasty Warriors franchise. The company made the announcement at Japan's Jump Festa 2017. The ninth iteration of the Dynasty Warriors series is being reinvented as an open-world brawler which sounds awesome. This will mark the 20th anniversary of the franchise.

The latest in the Japanese series of hack-and-slash games, Dynasty Warriors, has been revealed. The game was revealed in an official trailer. Dynasty Warriors 9, known as Shin Sangoku Musou 8 in Japan, will be coming out sometime in the near future. The trailer also refers to the game as the 8th in the series.

This is the result of the world outside Japan considering an earlier game set in the same Dynasty Warriors universe but with different gameplay as the first game in the Dynasty Warriors franchise. The Japanese do not consider that earlier as part of the hack-and-slash series that is known today.

According to gaming website GameSpot, Koei Tecmo, the publisher of the Dynasty Warriors franchise, has stated that the upcoming game is going to have open-world gameplay for the first time in the series. The game will allow players to enter and exit villages as they please. The franchise will go on to a completely new direction because of this. Producer Akihiro Suzuki has described Dynasty Warriors 9 as a rebirth of the series.

Gaming website PC Gamer reported that developer Omega Force is planning to use the whole of the mainland Chinese continent as one huge in-game world map. Towns and villages will be more detailed since China does not have many wide-open spaces for battle. The combo system will also be overhauled.

According to gaming website Destructoid, Every character from Xtreme Legends 8 will be included along with some possibly new ones. All 83 playable characters from Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires will be included together with a select number of fighters. No launch date has been set for now. Dynasty Warriors 9 however is expected to be released next year to commemorate the franchise's 20th anniversary.
