Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is the top selling console game of 2016, based on revenues. It only took one month for the game to be the top-grossing title of the year. It is the 8th consecutive year that a game from the Call of Duty franchise has taken the number one spot.

The NPD Group has released its latest report on the top selling games for November. Many large games are released during November so these figures are valuable. According to Forbes magazine, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was reported to have about 50% lower sales than Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 at the same time last year. Even with the decline in sales, it does not mean that the franchise no longer pulls in a lot of revenue.

The franchise is still popular. The NPD Group's latest report, which tracks physical sales as well as some digital sales in the U.S., show Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare as the top-selling game for November 2016. The game beat out Battlefield 1, the two Pokemon games, as well as Titanfall 2 which was unexpectedly the 5th top seller of the month.

BusinessWire published a press release that Activision officially announced in a press release that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is the #1 console video game in the U.S., based on year-to-date revenues from physical sales. The company also said that it was the 8th consecutive year that a Call of Duty franchise game had become the #1 grossing console game of the year at retail in the U.S.

According to gaming website GameSpot, one of two important pieces of information to note about Activision's statement is that Infinite Warfare may probably not be the number one game if PC games and digital sales are factored in. The other important information is that Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon are taken as separate games. If they counted together as one game, they would surpass the sales of Infinite Warfare.

It shows the popularity of the Call of Duty franchise that even if one of its games has not been as critically well received and as successful in terms of sales, compared to its past brethren, it still was able to overtake its competition. A special edition version of the game may have helped its sales since Modern Warfare Remastered was only available with the more expensive editions of Infinite Warfare. The decline in sales of the Call of Duty franchise was reflected in the decline in sales of the whole gaming industry.

The top 3 games of 2016 had 43 percent lower sales than the top three of last year. Console and handheld retail game sales in the U.S. were down 18 percent. U.S. retail sales of PC games were down 28 percent and hardware sales were down 35 percent. This shows that there was a decline in general and not just specifically for Activision's Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
