Peter Molyneux, the legendary British game designer who created the classic games Populous, Dungeon Keeper, Black & White, Theme Park, and the Fable series, released his new game, The Trail, on the Android Play Store and iOS App Store. The mobile game was launched without the fanfare that usually accompanies the release of games designed by the famous game developer.

According to gaming news sites Kotaku and IGN, and tech news site Engadget, Peter Molyneux's game company 22 Cans quietly released their new free-to-play mobile game The Trail for Android and iOS. 22 Cans teamed up with web and smartphone publisher Kongregate to launch the widely-rumored next game from designer Peter Molyneux.

The Trail is an Oregon Trail-style exploration and empire-building adventure game where players backpack their way through an undiscovered wilderness. They explore a lush countryside, gathering loot, crafting gear, and trading or working with other players, and in the process, can become a leader of the town after starting from nothing.

Players can craft weapons and tools from items that they obtain as they progress through the game. With their weapons and tools, they can hunt for sources of food. The food can then be traded with other players to accumulate enough wealth to settle down in a community. Molyneux said that the game was an exciting project for him. The Trail allowed him to get back to his roots as a game designer and infuse into the game, his passion for creating transformative play experiences.

The Trail was initially soft-launched in the Philippines in September but was not widely released. Contrary to his past handling of his games, Molyneux did not discuss The Trail in any real detail. The launch of the game was not accompanied by the fanfare and hype that Molyneux was known for. This may have been a result of his previous game Curiosity: What's Inside the Cube, which was also 22 Cans' first game. This game garnered a lot of attention but did not live up to its promise and, in truth, it wasnt a very good game. All the coverage received by Curiosity: What's Inside the Cube, was not deserved, so this time, for The Trail, Molyneux may have wanted to avoid a similar situation.
