Red Hook Studios, the developer of the critically well-received and huge-hit game Darkest Dungeon, celebrated their achievement of selling one million copies of Darkest Dungeon. The studio marked the milestone by first announcing the achievement on their blog and then thanking all of their supporters before providing details on the sales of the game.

Several game news sites, such as GameSpot, PC Gamer, Gamereactor, Gamasutra, and even tech news site, iTechPost, reported that Red Hook Studios had announced on its blog that it had sold a groundbreaking one million copies of its breakout gothic RPG game on various platforms. The studio also gave thanks to its supporters and revealed information regarding the sales of Darkest Dungeon.

Darkest Dungeon was a crowdfunding success story. It was funded with $313,000 on Kickstarter. It entered Steam Early Access and it turned out to be a great game. A lot of people thought it was indeed and that is why, following the release of Darkest Dungeon on the PS4 and PS Vita, it eventually reached a million copies sold.

Red Hook Studios read an article from Yacht Club Games after its game Shovel Knight sold a million copies. Red Hook Studios was appreciative of the transparency of Yacht Club Games about reaching the one million figure and they wanted to continue what they started. The team posted on their blog, an open letter to their supporters, expressing gratitude and giving information on the breakdown of sales of Darkest Dungeon and how they sold a million copies.

Steam was a big reason why the game was able to sell that well. 94% of sales were on Steam, despite the game being sold on different game stores, namely PSN, GOG, Humble, OSX App Store, CDP.pl, SoftClub, and Nuuvem. The development team stated that a reason why Steam had sold more than the other stores was that Darkest Dungeon was released much later for other stores than Steam because of its release on Steam's Early Access. When the game was released on Early Access, 50,000 copies were sold in the first 24 hours and the team could not believe what happened.
