Scientist has been working on the new male birth control for a few decades now. Some may not be aware that most men have few choices when it comes to birth control methods. Women have several choices in methods for preventing pregnancy. They can choose a wide range of options to control fertility while men have only been limited to abstinence, vasectomy, withdrawal and condoms.

Recently a study was published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism; found that only four pregnancies have resulted among 266 men who used the contraceptives shot in 320 healthy men in monogamous relationship with their female partners. Men ages from 18-45 were chosen and were tested to ensure they had a normal sperm count, according to CNN News.

According to the clinical studies, men are given injections every eight weeks of a synthetic form of testosterone and nonethisterone enanthate. The researchers have used a combination of hormones in order to reduce testosterone levels which would effectively lower fertility.

CNN has reported that serious case of negative side effects is resulting from the shots including one case of depression and one experiencing an abnormally fast and irregular heartbeat after the injections stopped. Furthermore, 20 men dropped out early due to side effects. Adverse effects felt were injection pain site, muscle pain, acne and increased libido. The researchers had firmly said that nearly 39 percent of these symptoms including one death by suicide were unrelated to the shots. But, due to the side effects particularly depression, mood swings and other mental disorders the clinical trials was halted earlier than planned.

The recent male hormonal contraception has its fair share of controversies since woman had a different response of the clinical trials being halted due to its adverse side effects including weight gain, acne, depression and mood swings. Even though, the studies had yielded that it has a 96 percent successful rate only slightly lower than birth control for women. Sarcasm and laughter were most of its responses from women who thinks these effects have long been experienced and tried by so many women in birth control methods.

According to Huffington Post, "No one is mocking the dangerous side effects of hormonal birth control, least of all women, who have been subjected to for decades. Women are laughing because we are fed up and angry that double standards continue to define our lives".However, 80 percent of the participating men in the clinical trials are willing to get the shot despite the risk.
