Distressing footage has become viral showing weekend beachgoers were hurled along the rocky shores of Sydney's Royal National Park after a rogue wave hit.

The video shows swimmers spotting the wave and screaming out to others to 'get out' of the water as the wave is about to crash down on top of them.

'Oh f**k brace yourselves!' yelled one man who is in a higher ground on the shore. As swimmers tried to flee, the wave swept them off their feet.

Painful screams could be heard as soon as the wave hit the beachgoers. Emergency services were immediately called to respond to more than 100 people smashed by the powerful wave.

Some were seriously injured. Rescue helicopters were also deployed to the scene where three women were airlifted to St. George Hospital.

A 22-year-old woman suffered severe head injuries, and another woman, aged 53, broke her ankle. A woman who hit her head was also airlifted to get immediate attention. All three women have been discharged.

Other swimmers suffered bruises, cuts, grazes and one woman copped several cuts to the head. Surf Lifesavers used inflatable boats to treat injured swimmers.

Visitors are warned to exercise care when walking along the rocky coast by National Park rangers. Figure eight pools started being a popular tourist spot when photos of the area were posted on social media.
