Three police officers died in a shootout with two other officers suspected of drug trafficking at terminal 2 of the Mexico City's airport on Monday.

Other travelers at the airport panicked and started looking to cover themselves after hearing gunshots at the airport. Milenio Television reported that more than a dozen shots were heard and the television also showed a body lying on the floor of the terminal at the airport.

Reports say that the shootout took place when the three police officers approached the two suspects at terminal 2 of the airport from where both the international and domestic flights move. Two agents died on the spot and the third one died of injuries later on the way to the hospital.

The suspects are believed to be a member of a larger group of officials involved in a cocaine ring, Mexico's security ministry said in a statement, reported Reuters.

Only in the last year more than 330 gang war killing have been reported making the capital and its surroundings more unsafe for the people living and travelers too. Drug violence has killed around 55,000 people in the past five and half years in the country.

Federal Police in Mexico have seized more than 440 pounds (200 kilograms) of cocaine at the capital's airport so far this year, which is almost double the amount held last year.

The arrival and departure at the airport started functioning normally very soon after the incident, said the airport spokesman Jorge Gomez to Milenio, reported Reuters.
