A small plane carrying two individuals - the instructor and a student who are both males - made an emergency landing last Wednesday, September 16, on one of the streets in Irvine.

The plane was identified to be a single-engine Piper Cherokee aircraft. It made its emergency landing around 6:18 in the evening just near the John Wayne Airport at Red Hill and McGaw avenues. The emergency landing took place amidst rush-hour traffic. Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority said it rolled to a full stop near MacArthur Boulevard.

According to reports from The Orange County Register, airport spokeswoman Jenny Wedge said the plane is owned by Orange Coast College. However, it is based at the airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will spearhead the investigation, but there were no injuries or damages reported as of writing. The cause of the said emergency landing has yet to be determined, but Daily Pilot reports that it involved an engine failure. The cause of the engine failure is yet to be identified.

The Orange County Register reports further states that Wedge explained that the plane will be parked outside the airport because it wings do not fold up. It was scheduled to be brought inside via a wider gate on Thursday.

Although the emergency landing caused some Red Hill southbound lanes to be closed, it did not affect the operations of the airport
