Just a few weeks ago, it was confirmed that Marvel and Sony had officially sealed a deal that Spider-Man will finally be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After this, the web-slinging movie franchise continued to make headlines after reports confirmed that Andrew Garfield will not be returning to reprise his role.

The Internet was immediately abuzz that the film makers wanted to replace Garfield with an actor from a younger generation, dragging Dylan O’Brien and Logan Lerman into the mix. Now, though, it looks like Spidey’s fans have been, once again, sent into a frenzy with this latest string of rumors.

“Listen, this is not set in stone, guys,” Jeff Sneider of The Wrap said at the Meet the Movie Press podcast, as posted on YouTube. “I’m telling you right now, Spider-Man’s not gonna be white. I am 95% sure. Spider-Man’s gonna be, most likely, black. But, there’s a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure – not white.”

“I don’t think it’s gonna be Peter Parker,” he added. According to Games Radar, this statement, if confirmed to be a true, leaves the door wide open for Miles Morales to finally take the limelight. Morales is a Black Hispanic teenager who took up the Spider-Man role in the Ultimate Comics storyline when Peter Parker met his demise.

Sneider’s statements were in stark contrast of the announcement made by Sony Pictures President Doug Belgrad in an official press release posted on Marvel. Belgrad had specifically named Peter Parker as the character who was going to be part of the MCU, as reiterated by Screen Rant.

A few years back, Garfield had reportedly campaigned that Morales be featured in movies under the “Amazing Spider-Man” franchise, in a scene that depicts him as Parker passing the torch to Morales, whoever the actor was going to be.

Marvel’s friendly-neighborhood web-slinger will finally enter the MCU in “Captain America: Civil War” on May 16 of 2016, and will also have a solo film on July 28, 2017.
