In Vail, Colorado, the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships are occurring from February 2-15. This is the first time in 15 years that this event will be held in the United States. For those who love to watch skiing, this is a chance to see some of the best in the world hit the slopes.

The first ever World Indigenous Games will be held in Porto Nacional, Brazil on September 18-25. Brazil has held these Games for the past 10 years, but this is the first time that the invitation was opened to athletes from indigenous groups in other countries. Thirty countries will be represented during this first year while the athletes compete in athletics such as log racing, javelin, headball, archery, tug-of-war, football, among others.

The festival starts with the Shetland's Up Helly Aa Vikings leading a torchlight procession, while simultaneously playing pipes and drums, up to the top of Calton Hill, where there is a huge fireworks spectacle. After which 100,000 people sing "Auld Lang Syne" in unison and party all evening.
