Greece has become a very popular destination with its ancient ruins and Mediterranean coastline.  It is here that democracy began.  There is an appeal to come to Greece, in particular Athens to see where it began and to experience the great accomplishments of the ancient Greek civilization.  There is also the natural beauty of the coast with the blue waters and cliffs that allure people.

Part of this natural beauty of Athens is watching the sunset over the ruins.  The sun illuminates the outline, and the structures have a glow about them. The city below you begins to come to life as the lights start to turn on.  The hills are dark and contrast the sky and the Athens they surround.   Here are some of the best places in Athens to see the sun set.

Where ever you are staying most likely has some type of rooftop patio.  Athens can get quite hot during summer, and the roof usually has a good breeze to cool you off.  This is great spot to watch the sunset on your first night in Athens or if you are too tired to go out.  You will be able to see most of the city below and the hills that surround Athens.  If you are lucky you might even see the Acropolis from your rooftop, which is lit up at night and has a rather spectacular glow to it as the sunsets behind it.

Another great location to watch the sunset is from the top of Lycabettus Hill.  While it is a steep climb to the top, you can take a taxi or tram up.  There is lovely little café at the top as well as an amphitheater that is still used as a venue and a Byzantium church.  Once up there you can stroll around looking through the church and theater and sit down for dinner before watching the sunset over the city and the city illuminate at night. From here you have an entire of view of the city: the sea, the hills, the Acropolis, and the other sights.  The perfect spot to see all of Athens bathed in the sunset light.

Outside of the city is a small cape called Cape Sounion.  There is the Temple of Poseidon overlooking the Aegean Sea.  From here you can watch the sunset on the water.   You can walk around the ruins while the sun begins to set, but the best thing is to watch the moonrise.  Walk over to the adjacent hill and find a spot among the rocks or dangle your feet over the edge.  When the moon rises it reflects in the sea below you, and there is a gentle breeze that blows through your hair.  It is a very relaxing moment.

There are many amazing places in Athens to enjoy the sunset.  Pick one and you'll feel as if you've been transported into a Grecian myth.  No matter where you end up enjoying the Greek sunset, it will for sure be an experience you'll never forget.
