Nebraska's coach Bo Pelini was fired by director of athletics Shawn Eichorst Sunday morning, and the announcement is set to take effect immediately.

According to USA Today, Nebraska Cornhuskers' head football coach Bo Pelini has been fired after seven seasons of failing to make the team win against tough competitors.

Despite contributing nine wins to the team, his lack of contribution in terms of making the Nebraska Cornhuskers known at the national championship is what marked his seven-season tutelage with the team.

On Sunday morning, the announcement of Pelini's dismissal was dropped on the team's official Twitter account, Nebraska Huskers.

"Director of Athletic Shawn Eichorst has dismissed Head Football Coach Bo Pelini effective immediately. Press conference 1pm," the team's post read.

Since he was fired ahead of the end of his contract with the team, Pelini is to receive $150,000 for each month of the remaining 51 months  or $1.8 million a yearunder the contract.

Later at the press conference, Eichorst personally explained the situation and his decision to fire the 46-year-old coach.

"I didn't see enough improvement in areas that were important for us to move forward and play championship-caliber football," Richest said of Pelini. "We weren't good enough in games that mattered against championship-caliber opponents."

Following the the longtime coach's dismissal, it was announced that associate head coach, Barney Cotton, is to act as interim head coach for the time being.

Meanwhile, when coach Bo Pelini was asked to comment on the issue, he simply said, "I'm good. Thanks for asking!"

Eichorst revealed that prior to the big announcement, he and Pelini had already talked on Saturday morning in both a professional and cordial manner, reports ESPN.

Interestingly, while the father of three has already accepted Eichorst's decision, the Cornhuskers players seem to be not pleased with what has happened.

"Biggest mistake you ever made.... Bo was the best coach I've ever had and I'll always appreciate the things you taught me," Nebraska QB Tommy Armstrong Jr. wrote on Twiter.

Offensive lineman Matthew Finnin also joined Armstrong's rant against Eichorst, according to Deadspin.

"This'll go down as the worst decision Eichorst will make in his career. He don't care tho. Just biding his time til Wisconsin opens up," Finnin initially wrote.

"At the end of the day Bo was the only one who gave a shit about us. You think Eichorst or Pearlman gave a shit? All they care about is $$," he added.
