The 2014 US Open championships continue to heat up with several big names and promising youngster vying for a spot in the next round. Former world's no.1 and heavy favorite Roger Federer looks to keep going as he faces Sam Groth, while Venus Williams tries to sustain her run when she takes on Sara Errani on Friday.

The 33-year old Federer cruised into the second round with a masterful opening round performance against Marinko Matosevic of Australia  6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4), earning his 50th win this season.

"I knew he could serve and volley that some. He did that against me a little bit in Brisbane. That he did it first or second serve or almost after every serve starting I think in the third set, the numbers are going to go up quickly coming to net. I didn't change my game from my perspective on my serve," Federer told reporters following his win over Matosevic.

"I definitely tried to change things around a little bit on the return. I guess it's a good thing that I played someone like him, because my next opponent is going to be a serve-and-volley player as well, which plays different than any baseliner out there, that's for sure."

The Swiss Master will then play against a younger Aussie in Groth, who defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Venus Williams punched to the third round of women's singles play with a marvelous 6-1, 6-4 win over Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland in just under 90 minutes of play. The 34-year old Williams is coming off her finest campaign in North American hard court season since her heyday, advancing to the final round of the Rogers Cup.

However, Williams' road to glory is going to be a lot tougher moving forward with several elite women's netters waiting for her down the road. One of them is Errani, who blasted Australia's Anastasia Rodionova, 6-4, 7-6.

Aside from Venus, Maria Sharapova will also try to advance against Germany's Sabine Lisicki, while another former world's no.1 Caroline Wozniacki will lock horns with Andrea Petkovic.
