Manchester United is reportedly open to break the world record on transfer fee in their attempt to bring a player in the caliber of Real Madrid midfielder Angel di Maria and reigning Ballon d' Orr striker Cristiano Ronaldo, a source close to situation reported on Friday,

The Red Devils are still looking for a big name in the market after acquiring Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal from Italian Serie A powerhouse Juventus. With manager Louis Van Gaal in search for another piece to complete his 3-5-2 formation, Manchester United has reportedly made an inquiry for Di Maria.

"The Argentina international has been heavily linked with Manchester United and the Dutchman has hinted that a bid could be tabled this summer," according to Goal.com on Friday.

Di Maria's end of tenure with the Galacticos has become inevitable following the arrival of Columbian winger James Rodriguez. The Argentine previously disclosed that he wanted to join Paris Saint-Germain, but the French Ligue giant reportedly backed off from their negotiation with Real Madrid to stay under the principle of financial fair play.

With PSG taking a step back, UEFA Champions League contenders Manchester United and Monaco emerge as the favorites to take the midfielder.

"Di Maria's first choice has always been Paris Saint-Germain so he retains hope of a move there, but is open to joining either United or Monaco. The latter's sway is somewhat helped by their participation in the Champions League."

Monaco is an emerging power in the French League, but many pundits believed the Red Devils' financial capability will overpower their bid to acquire the crafty winger. Van Gaal is already pressing Manchester United ownership to break the world transfer record held by Gareth Bale (85 million pound) if that's what it takes to get Di Maria.

Another target Manchester United is coveting is no other than former Old Trafford mainstay Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese striker has not ruled out a possible return to his old team, as he believed no one really knows what's going to happen next.

"At this moment, we have five number nines and four number 10s - and we don't have wingers to give us attacking width," Van Gaal told Goal.com "Or, I should say, we don't have wingers of the highest level, like Ronaldo or Di Maria or somebody like that."
