232 teeth removed from Indian boy recently may just be considered one of the oddest world records ever. Apparently though, the Indian boy with the 232 teeth removed is not just an ordinary teen as he was reportedly suffering from a rare medical condition.

17-year-old Ashik Gavai was the name of the boy who had his 232 teeth removed in a six-hour operation Monday. This might seem odd, but according to TIME, Gavai is still left with 28 teeth in his mouth - fewer than most adult mouths.

Mirror reports that before he had his 232 teeth removed, Ashik had been experiencing pain in his jaw for over a year-and-a-half, after which he left his Indian village to seek proper treatment in the city.

Ashik was later admitted to JJ Hospital in Mumbai, India, complaining of swollen gums.

According to reports, Gavai had a condition called composite odontoma. It is a benign tumor which forms in the mouth and causes additional teeth to grow as well. In the case of Gavai, a molar tooth in his lower jaw reportedly had already multiplied to hundreds of smaller teeth; hence the operation where the 232 teeth removed was inevitable.

Gavai only went under the knife Monday after over a year-and-a-half as doctors discovered his condition only recently.

According to TIME, doctors of the teen at J.J. Hospital in Mumbai could not immediately remove the tumor located deep in Gavai's jaw by just using normal surgical tools. Therefore, they instead decided to make use of "basic chisel and hammer" at first, then later on delicately had the 232 teeth removed one-by-one.

His doctors reportedly considered their operation with Gavai as a "world record," and they already have plans of submitting it to Guinness World Records.

Dr Sudanda Dhiware, head of the hospital's dentistry department, told the Washington Post of Gavai's 232 teeth removed, 'Ashik's malaise was diagnosed as a complex composite odontoma where a single gum forms lots of teeth. It's a sort of benign tumour. At first, we couldn't cut it out so we had to use the basic chisel and hammer to take it out. Once we opened it, little pearl-like teeth started coming out, one-by-one.'

Dr Dhiware also expressed her excitement over the whole process of having the 232 teeth removed. She said, 'I have never seen anything like it in all my years of practice. We were so excited by it. And it was really fun for us to be able to extract them all, one by one.'

Reports say that the teenager's condition doesn't normally result in countless teeth like Gavai's, but Dhiware cited a case in medical literature which showed that as many as 37 teeth have been extracted in the past - still a far cry from Gavai's 232 teeth removed.

According to TIME, Gavai comes from a poor family of cotton growers in a place far from Mumbai. Months before the operation which had his 232 teeth removed, he already noticed swelling along his jaw. However, local doctors were unable to fix his condition at first since his family wasn't financially capable of seeking proper medical treatment immediately.

However, because his family feared that Ashik's puffy cheek may have been cancer-related, his family had no choice but to seek help from a state-run hospital. There they eventually obtained enough funds through a program which offers financial support to poor patients.

Suresh Gavai, Ashik's father said of the time before his son's 232 teeth removed, 'I was worried that it may turn out to be cancer so I brought him to Mumbai.'

Meanwhile, the Mirror reports that the hospital believes the operation to be a world record for the most of teeth ever extracted.

According to reports, Ashik will have his remaining teeth capped after he fully recovers from the operation of his 232 teeth removed. However, experts reportedly believe that there still might be a chance that the condition could recur.

232 teeth removed from Gavai's mouth sure took its toll on the teenager from India. As of the current moment, Gavai is still trying to recover from the surgery. His doctors are also hoping that the condition doesn't reoccur.
