The best restaurants in the world have been announced according to a survey based on reviews by paying customers.

Elite Traveler magazine, a lifestyle publication aimed at wealthy travelers, surveyed its readers on their favorite restaurants and gourmet chefs over the past year. The best restaurant in the world, taking the top spot is Alinea in Chicago. Alinea is headed by chef Grant Achatz.

Among the list are three New York restaurants for the Top 10 restaurants in the world. They include DANIEL, Eleven Madison, and La Bernadin -- taking second, fourth, and fifth place respectively. DANIEL, owned by the French chef Daniel Boulud, also made the top three last year.

The Fat Duck in Berkshire, UK took the third spot. This restaurant is owned by celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal. His other restaurant, Dinner, took the 23rd spot. Blumenthal was also named Chef of the Year by the magazine.

"Food critics are very important for the business and obviously to bring the general public in, but ultimately you're cooking for your customers and you want to give them the best pleasure and experience. So to have this recognition, after we've been going for nearly twenty years, it's fantastic," Blumenthal told Elite Traveler.
