It's famous, it's widespread, Ellen DeGeneres' joke against Liza Minelli at the Oscars has many people offended, and many others have called her 'transphobic' for it.

Ellen DeGeneres is a famous comedian and TV show host that everybody loves, but one of her joke while hosting the 2014 Academy Awards about actress Liza Minnelli wasn't that funny for the whole world.

The lines from the now trending "joke" include: "Hello to the best Liza Minnelli impersonator I've ever seen. Good job, sir."

Liza Minelli has been a favorite subject for female impersonators and drag artists over the years. She was also rumored plastic surgery devotee, according to the Washington Post.

For that, some enraged and critical viewers took to Twitter to express their views on the incident, especially prominent lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) figures. These include director Bruce LaBruce, calling the joke "transphobic and disrespectful".

What does Liza Minelli has to say about all this?

She certainly  wasn't laughing at Ellen DeGeneres' controversial Oscars joke. The 67-year-old told TMZ in an encounter, "I think she thought it would be funny, but she never stopped after she said it and said, 'My friend Liza Minnelli'. So I think it went a little astray on her."

But Minnelli also added, "I don't think she meant any harm at all. She's a wonderful lady."

Meanwhile, theater writer and Minnelli fan Steve Schonberg has launched a petition in order to get DeGeneres to formally apologize for the joke.

Schonberg told The Huffington Post in an email, "Liza has been such an avid supporter of our community, even during the peak of the AIDS crisis, and simply put -- I think she deserves a lot more respect."

What Liza Minnelli has to say after Ellen Degeneres' female impersonator joke at the Oscars has apparently less impact that the opinion of critics and concerned citizens alike. Let's just hope that Ellen apologizes soon so critics can be finally put to rest before her career suffers.
