Meteorologists in Australia are scratching their heads as to what the S-shaped formation that showed up on their radar could be. The shape appeared about 20 miles off the coast of Rottnest Island in West Australia and is being dubbed the 'Rott Nest Monster' on social media platforms.

According to abc.net.au, a spokesman for the Department of Defence said in a statement, that the exercise was a regular training activity for ships and aircraft designed to prepare a Navy warship for an operational deployment.

"The environmental conditions over the West Australian coast at the time of the activity provided a unique opportunity for this routine activity to be visible on the weather radar display," he said.

Speculation is cropping up as to what the shape could be, as the bureau has ruled out the possibility that it could be caused by a cloud and a fair amount of sarcasm is being lauded at the unidentified radar blip.

The West Australian Weather Group snagged the photo bearing the S-shaped entity and retweeted it to their followers.

"Nice that our pet #RottNessMonster has avoided the shark baits. Her name is Susan & she likes to eat plankton," the group tweeted.

Other groups are quipping that our 'giant sea serpent overlords have returned. Whatever the S-shaped formation may be, let's just agree to stay out of the water.
