A plane heading for Turkey was forced to make an emergency landing on Friday after someone tried to hijack the aircraft.

A Pegasus Airlines flight had left from Kharkov, Ukraine and was carrying 110 passengers to Istanbul's Sabiha Gökçen Airport, but was forced to send an alert to the airport due to an attempted hijack, CNN Turkey reports.

"Turkish Transport Ministry official tells CNNTurk Ukrainian man who tried to hijack Pegasus Air Flight w/bomb threat demanded to go to Sochi," CNN's Ivan Watson tweeted.

"While the plane was in the air, one of the passengers said that there was a bomb on board and asked the plane to not land in Sabiha Gokcen (in Turkey) but rather to land in Sochi," Transportation Ministry official Habip Soluk said Friday on CNNTurk.

The hijacker was trying to divert the plane to Sochi, where the Winter Olympics are taking place. The Opening Ceremony was just getting started, CNN reported. However a Turkish official tried to deny the report when questioned by the Associated Press. The hijacker seems to be from the Ukraine.

After the pilot sent out the alert, F-16s were sent in to the air to follow the plane. The plane was able to land and parked in a safe area and was met by security forces. The plane landed in Istanbul.

"#Turkey's Transportation Mins. says security forces are investigating parked plane. No confirmation of attempt to divert flight to Sochi," Wall Street Journal's Emre Peker tweeted.

"The flight crew worked hard to convince the hijackers to abort their attempt," Turkish newspaper Today's Zaman reported.
