With a little planning and a couple things in your carry-on bag, you can travel without looking like an oily mess with flat hair when you land.

For Skin:

Preparation

Before leaving, exfoliate your skin, dermatologist Dr. Marina Peredo, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York told Conde Naste Travel. Keeping skin hydrated starts at home.

"Exfoliating your skin is important because it gets rid of the top layer of dead skin cells that prevent any moisturizer from absorbing into the skin," Peredo said.

Packing

Bring a moisturizer that has ultra-hydrating hyaluronic acid. Dr. Peredo then suggests asking for a cool, wet cloth to pat on your skin before applying moisturizer.

"The lotion will absorb and retain better in the skin when your face is damp," she says.

Eye creams that have ingredients like retinol and peptides like amino acids to help produce more collagen in the skin, as well as antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E, which have preventive and repairing effects on the skin.

Another good idea is to bring nuts to snack on. They are anti-inflammatory and will help you feel full and avoid processed foods.

Action

Dr. Peredo recommends trying to avoid lowering the seat all the way back as it can cause fluid retention.

"Fluid may retain in your eyes, causing bags to develop," she says.

It is also important to remember to walk around the plane a few times during your flight. This will circulate the blood and help prevent bloat to keep your skin from looking sallow.

For Hair:

Preparation

Travel with more volume in your hair to start with by using a volumizer and having a blow out. This can be accomplished by applying the volumizer to your roots while blow-drying your hair.

Packing

Bring an inflatable neck travel pillow and put long hair into a ponytail or bun, stylist Daniela Schult told Conde Nast Travel.

"These styles also always travel well and are easy to touch-up in the bathroom," she says.

Damage Control

After you land, it is always unpleasant to see your reflection in the bathroom. A method that can improve the situation is to use an ice cube and a napkin under your eyes to try to prevent puffiness. You can also carry oil-absorbing sheets, which can help you remove excess oil that built up on your skin during the flight.
