Two men died Friday morning in a Canadian day care center, after one armed with a shotgun rushed in a little before 10:30 a.m. and opened fire.

He struck a man who worked at the Gatineau, Quebec home day care, who later passed away in the hospital.

The gunman then shot himself, and died instantly.

None of the 53 children at the day care, all of whom are under the age of 5, were hurt.

Police say the two men had gone through some kind of "recent separation," and that incited the shooting-witnesses claim the owner of the day care had separated from her husband  recently, and he could have been the shooter.

They have not released the names of the victim, nor the assailant, until their respective families have been notified.

The shooter's body was found in a neighboring day care, close to the Racines de vie Montessori school, reports the Toronto Sun.

It is unclear whether or not the children witnessed the actual shooting, but caretakers took pains to remove the children as quickly as possible-upon hearing shots, the staff at the Montessori School immediately evacuated the premises, to which police praised their speedy response.

Parents picked up their kids from school in a dazed flurry, rushing to sweep the children to safety.

"I've never been scared like that in my life," one parent named Genevieve told the Sun.

"I was terrified," Dave Sugden said. He was on his way to nearby Ottawa when he heard an announcement of the shooting on the radio. He swung back around with haste to pick up his daughter, Hazel, who was at the day care. "I almost threw up in the car on the way over."

While they awaited their guardians, children were housed in a police-guarded bus near the two day cares.

"There's no words," neighbor Michelle Leveille, who lives next door, said. "[It's] truly a tragedy."
