A Scottish airline will officially continue to operate the world's shortest flight. Depending on wind direction, the flight could be as short as 47 seconds.

Loganair has signed a three-year contract to operate a flight in the Orkney Islands. The airline was in a fight with competitors to have control of the route. The distance between Westray and the Papa Westray islands is only a mile long, so the eight-person flight can be done in as little as 47 seconds.

Loganair has been running this flight since it started its service to the islands in 1967. The flight costs $30(£21).

'It's a great privilege to maintain operations on one of the world's most famous routes, linking two islands while being a milestone for the many aviation enthusiasts who travel from far and wide to complete the journey," Phil Preston, chief operating officer at Loganair said, according to Sky News. "We're extremely proud of the vital services we offer to the island communities of Orkney'.

While Loganair operates the world's shortest flight, the world's longest flight is run by Singapore Airlines. The flight from Singapore to New York is 18 hours. However he airline will be stopping this service by the end of the year.
