In China a popular dish is cola chicken where chicken wings are stir friend with a sauce of soy, cola and other ingredients. Now Lays and Pepsi are capitalizing in on the popular dish with their Pepsi-chicken chips. A sweet, savory combo of chicken and Pepsi in chip form.

AdAge reports that PepsiCo caome up with the idea when they had a brainstorm session.

The snack is currently only available in China. AdAge describes its distinct flavor: "In potato-chip form, the flavor is vaguely similar to barbecue with a sugary aftertaste. If there's any hint of Pepsi, it's fleeting and lacks fizz."

Richard Lee, PepsiCo's chief marketing officer in China said that the company thought it would be "really cool to have a cola combined with chicken. It's a very popular dish in China. Also it would be very cool to involve one of our most-iconic soft drinks."

Other chips that Lays has come out with include cucumber, lemon tea and hot-and-sour fish soup.

The TV ad that came out in August includes a man rushing out to buy some Pepsi for his girlfriend but instead of drinking it she pours it in the chicken to create the sweet, caramelized cola chicken wings.

Pepsi has been making strides in China. In November it opened the largest R&D center outside of North America in Shanghai, reports The Daily Mail.

Associate principal at the China Market Research Group, Ben Cavender said to The Daily Mail, "I think Pepsi is probably better-positioned with the packaged food that it has to really make some gains there."
