At Rome's Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, a 36-year-old man somehow fell asleep on a baggage belt and traveled 160 feet before going through an X-ray scanner.

The Norweigan man who remains unnamed arrived at Rome's busy airport with just a backpack and a can of beer in his hand. He was set to get on a flight to Oslo when he found that no one was on duty at the desk so he climbed across the counter and fell asleep on the baggage belt with his bag.

The baggage belt started to move and the passed out traveler went through the secure baggage area before officials saw a body on the xray machine curled up in fetal position. Reportedly the man was hard to wake by police who were called to the scene to investigate.

A senior officer at the airport said that the incident was not the first incident that has involved individuals drinking or having psychological problems. He said to The Telegraph, "There's usually an episode like this once a year and we are alerted. In this case we were notified and we sounded the alarm immediately and we took action."

Another officer told La Repubblica, an Italian Newspaper, It's impossible to avoid a situation like this if there's no employee at the check-in desk."

Apparently there was no way for the man to have ended up in sensitive areas of the airport but he could have kept going round and round the belt. A police officer told The Guardian newspaper, "There is a security system - a sort of roll-up blind - which can only be opened by the member of staff who loads the baggage,"a police officer is quoted as saying in the paper. "[The Norwegian] could have carried on going round the main belt, but he could never have ended up in sensitive areas of the airport."

There was no security threat to the airport, reports The Guardian. "There is a security system - a sort of roll-up blind - which can only be opened by the member of staff who loads the baggage," a police officer said to the paper. "[The Norwegian man] could have carried on going round the main belt, but he could never have ended up in sensitive areas of the airport."

After the man was awoken he was taken to the hospital and has reported to prosecutors as he is facing charges for causing alarm.
