Get To Know Meghalaya, India's Home In The Clouds
If you're itching for a bit of culture in your life, then it's probably a good idea to visit India. This place is home to a myriad of beautiful cultures, ancient villages, and age-old tribes that still thrive today. One of the must-travel destinations here is the Meghalaya, India's abode of the clouds.
One of the northeastern states in India, it's an up and coming tourist destination because of its lush greenery and its appeal as an adventures spot for hiking, caving, and canyoneering. It's also dubbed as the "wettest place on earth."
Also, Meghalaya is home to three Indian tribes-- Khasis, Garos and Jaintias. The Khasi people are most abundant, and they are one of the most colorful tribes on earth. They are famous for making their age-old tradition of creating living bridges, "woven from the aerial roots of giant jungle fig trees by generations of local villagers", according to Mon Voyage.
These natural formations are a delight to visit. They have been adorning Meghalaya's landscapes for many years, looking like the beautiful root bridges from the famous movie series, "The Lord of the Rings".
If you have the chance, visit the famous double-decker bridge in Nongriat village. Getting there requires a few hours of arduous trekking through the jungle, but the trip is definitely worth it.
Another place you should definitely visit in Meghalaya is the Nohkalikai Falls. It's the highest waterfalls in India and the 4th highest in the world. It's located 10 minutes from Cherapunji, the second wettest place on earth. Tourists can view the waterfall from a viewing platform, and nearby several local shops sell souvenirs such as pure honey and handmade hats.
Make sure you stop by the village of Mawlynnong, dubbed as "Asia's cleanest village." You wouldn't see any trash lying in sight, as the residents are very well-disciplined. Aside from being really clean, the village is really colorful-thanks to the neatly tended flower gardens found almost in every house.
Meghalaya's natural beauty is unmatched, and the adventures in store for every tourist cannot be found anywhere else. Plan your visit now!
